A treacherous hiking and wild camping expedition has been completed on a trail leading to the peak of Daishifushan in Fuxing District. Challenges included ladders, ropes and a lost trail straddling a narrow path above a drop of several hundred feet. Spectacular aerial views. New video to be released on December 31st.

The photo gallery has now been updated, check the gallery link below.

Join us on the many lesser known hiking trails and wild camping locations in the north of Taiwan that are frequented by few local people. This channel aims to explore those areas on and off trail in often challenging mountain environments and weather conditions.

There are a multitude of trails across the mountains and jungles of Taiwan. By planning expeditions into more remote areas the true splendor and natural beauty of this environment can be experienced. Keeping to well marked hiking trails is safe, but we will also deviate short distances into the jungle off trail to find good camping locations.

Formosa wild camping will share the expeditions of its members in its newly created Youtube channel so that everyone can experience a feeling of a totally natural excursion into the wilderness as it happened!

Principles of the expeditions

The following equipment (not an exhuastive list) has been extensively tested over several years during multiple expeditions in Taiwan:

  • Big Agnes tents (ultra light weight useful on the mountain trails, insect protection)
  • Durston X-Mid 1 tent for lightweight expeditions on steep mountain ascents
  • Deuter backpacks (robust, longevity) for day hikes and overnight camping
  • Gregory backpacks (tough, back adjustment, able to carry heavy loads comfortably)
  • Osprey EXOS 58L backpack for ultra light weight three day expeditions
  • Titanium pots and pans (lightweight)
  • Swiss Army knife (multiple applications)
  • Sea to summit sleeping pads (lightweight, compact)
  • Columbia hiking shoes (proven durabilty, waterproofing, and grip on wet surfaces)
  • Atunas sleeping pillow (durable, comfortable)
  • Salewa hiking shirts (quick drying, sun protection)
  • Patagonia fleeces (longevity, warm in winter)
  • Mammut rain jacket (good protection)
  • Deacathlon sleeping bags (warm enough in winter and lightweight)
  • Decathlon hiking poles (can survive several expeditions)
  • Outdoor Research hats (heavy rain and intense sun protection proven)
  • Jukmo quick release trouser belt (tight enough under a load)

Dried food which has been dehydrated at home is recommended for its light weight and low volume when packed away in the rucksack. This can be pasta based, easy to prepare with a sauce and vegetables, high in carbohydrates.

A vegetarian cooked meal is the most popular dish to prepare on our expeditions, as it is nutritious and reviving. Foods must be chosen that can survive more than a day in the subtropical heat of the jungle. So meat, cheese, butter and eggs are just not practical.

Elead Global plant based freeze dried products such as Soy Green, Soy Pro, Gogi Garden Coffee are recommened as healthy additions to any expedition. Soy Green and Soy Pro will provide essential nutrition that the body needs on overnight expeditions.

Formosa wild camping uses the following filming equipment on the trails:

  1. DJI Action Cam 4 / Insta360 Ace Pro 2
  2. DJI Mini Pro 4 / Mini 2
  3. HoverAir X1 Pro
  4. Insta360 G03

Hiking in extreme temperatures and high humidity up steep mountain ascents such as those found in Formosa can be physically demanding and easily lead to exhaustion. The body must be constantly hydrated and frequent short breaks introduced for resting and high calorie snacks for energy. Something salty should be consumed on the trails and something sweet to maintain blood suger levels (for non diabetics).

You can contact us at the email address below for any questions regarding wild camping in Taiwan and for further information about ordering Elead Global products.

    1. Thank you for your comment ! I have found it rare to meet people wild camping on the lesser known hiking trails in remote mountains south of Taipei. I think this area is often overlooked as a wild camping opportunity due to the popularity of the central mountains!

The subtropical evergreen forests of dense trees are indeed lush, wet and also very humid. It makes hiking hard work and also quite punishing on hiking gear!
